Hoy, 4 de octubre de 2007 se cumplen 50 años del lanzamiento y puesta en órbita del satélite llamado Sputnik que en español significa compañero de viaje. Éste fue el primer satélite artificial que pudo enviar el hombre al espacio.
En ese momento de la historia, corría una época de relativa calma entre los dos países más poderosos del mundo: la Unión Soviética y los Estados Unidos de América. No se libraba ninguna guerra militar, pero sí una guerra por los avances científicos y tecnológicos: la Guerra Fría. Y en sucesivos intentos por demostrar al mundo la superioridad militar y tecnológica de una nación respecto de la otra fue la URSS quién gano la primera carrera espacial.
Era un proyecto ultrasecreto que no conocía casi nadie, pues el espionaje entre ambas potencias estaba a la orden del día, y no se fiaban ni de las personas que tenían altos cargos dentro la organización espacial soviética.
Un mes menos un día después volvieron a lanzar otro satélite tripulado, pero aún no por un ser humano, sino por una perra de nombre Laika.
